An Egyptian writer and dentist, Alaa al-Aswany is a worldwide literary phenomenon thanks to the success of his novel The Yacoubian Building. He has notably published two collections : Friendly Fire and On the State of Egypt, in which he continues his work of demystifying Egyptian society. A politically-committed columnist, he took an active part in the Arab Spring in 2011 and participated in the Tahrir Square movement. This experience inspired him to write the novel J’ai couru vers le Nil, published in French in 2018.
