Competition - Creative documentary
In a detention centre in Iran, underage girls are serving sentences after a murder. With incredible talent, Mehrdad Oskouei juxtaposes scenes of laughter and play with face-to-face interviews where teenagers speak to the camera as if it were their own mother or victim - generally their father or brother, killed following years of abuse. As the interviews go on, it becomes clear that this is a world where men are in complete control. Footage shows the reflection of armed guards in a shattered window: is this not also a form of protection against the outside world? A highly original and extraordinarily masterful film, winner of Best Director at IDFA.
