In The Road to Freedom, both a concert and an eponymous album, Barbara Hendricks retraces the role that blues and gospel played during American history's great upheavals in memory of the activists who fought for civil rights against racial violence and the odious segregation of Jim Crow laws. A rare moment of emotion - and all the more necessary in a time where tensions over identity are high - interspersed with quotes from Martin Luther King. The struggle, whether musical or political, continues.
