No Fire Zone : the Killing Fields of Sri Lanka

By Callum Macrae

In 2009, while the world looked away, 40,000 to 70,000 civilians were massacred in Sri Lanka, mainly by the Sri Lankan government, determined to end a 26-year old war. No Fire Zone is a compilation of many of these individual stories, collected from hours of footage recorded by both victims and perpetrators on mobile phones and small cameras. Faced with the government’s censorship, which sealed the country off from foreign news crews and massacred dozens of its own journalists, the film is no less than an indictment for war crimes, replete with direct evidence of summary executions and sexual violence – an uncompromising example of cinema as an instrument for justice.
