Competition - Grand reportage

On the inside of a military dictatorship

By Karen Stokkendal Poulsen

The whole world, including the FIFDH, sang the praises of the Burmese Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, who came to power in 2015 after 50 years of ruthless military dictatorship. But just a few months later, as the Rohingya people underwent an appalling ethnic cleansing, she fell silent, eluding the subject, or even defending the policy. In 10 chapters, Karen Stokkendal Poulsen succeeds in shining a light behind the scenes of Burma's regime, giving a voice for the first time to the retreating generals, who reveal themselves in front of the camera, against the backdrop of a totally unknown world.
