Competition - Grand reportage

#387

By Madeleine Leroyer

This is the story of a Greek doctor who collects pendants and bracelets. It's the story of an Italian woman who has been fighting for 15 years to "make bodies talk". It’s the story of those who watch over forgotten migrants. According to the International Organization for Migration, 5083 people died in 2016 while trying to reach Europe by sea. 5083 names, the vast majority of them lost in the blue waters of the Mediterranean. What becomes of these bodies? Who identifies them? How do mothers and brothers try to find their missing family members? Number 387 takes us on this quest for identity in the heart of the humanitarian disaster that has marked the beginning of this century.
