Lebanese artist and director Ali Cherri sets up his camera in Sudan, on the banks of the Nile near the Merowe Dam. We follow the daily life of the workers in a brick factory against the backdrop of demonstrations against the dictatorship of Omar al-Bashir. Maher, the protagonist, when he is not working, builds a talking mud monster. The power of imagination allows him to escape from his slave labour and the heavy political and social situation in his country. Poetic and hypnotic, the film skillfully navigates between fiction and documentary.
Festival: Quinzaine des Cinéastes, Cannes Film Festival 2022
A meeting with Ali Cherri will take place on Thursday 16 March at 18:00 at the MAMCO (free admission).
