Grands rendez-vous

Pandemic and individual liberties: the perspective of Alain Berset

On 16 March 2020, faced with an unprecedented health crisis, the Federal Council was forced to adopt emergency legislation. The measures taken made it possible to halt the spread of the coronavirus and to help those sectors most affected. For a few months, they also infringed on fundamental freedoms.

One year after the first Swiss death linked to Covid-19, Federal Councillor Alain Berset, head of the Federal Department of Home Affairs, which includes overseeing of matters of public health and culture, will discuss the relevance of the measures taken to preserve public health in view of their impact on our life in society. In this discussion with the journalist Esther Mamarbachi, he will revisit the trauma of the pandemic, its impact on the health system, the economy and relations between individuals. He will also speak about the future, the emergence of solidarity in the face of the crisis, hope for a way out thanks to vaccination and the international issues behind the fight against a scourge that knows no borders.
