Democracies with clay feet, fragile human rights? Democracy and human rights are closely linked: the situation of one depends on the good health of the other. In recent years, particularly in Latin America, the principle of democracy has been greatly weakened. Human rights defenders are the first to make their voices heard, but they are also the first victims. What links can be made between democracy and human rights? Do activists have a role to play in cleaning up democracies?
