Photographs

Bruno Boudjelal took up residence in Meyrin from January to March 2019. The artist has met men and women who have arrived in Geneva after a difficult migration journey. With these powerful words a starting point: Let us not die tired, Boudjelal suggested that they tell us how, caught up in incessant flows, they manage not to lose their footing, to hold on, to become part of life. The artist listened to them, photographed them, and told their stories in texts.

A Frenchman of Algerian origin, Bruno Boudjelal practices photography as a way of life that constantly questions its own identity and confronts us with our own. In 1993, he left on the traces of his paternal origins in Algeria. This discovery proved the starting point for 10 years of a very personal exploration that bring him, between travel diary and testimony, to acknowledge the subjectivity of his point of view.

In light of trials of alleged war criminals abroad, the Liberian youth depict how they make sense of the past using cartoons. Driven by power imbalances and ethnic tensions, Liberia’s two multi-faction civil wars resulted in hundreds of thousands of brutal murders and the displacement of millions. Victims have been waiting 16 years in a state of fragile peace, yet there has been no domestic justice for the grave crimes committed.

When a war or a catastrophe hits, people are often stripped of their dignity and belongings. They are left with nothing, they feel worthless. Some flee and become refugees; the lucky ones manage to grab an object before they leave -a memorabilia connected to their past life. I have captured these records charged with priceless sentimental value. Looking at these objects, one can't help but reflect and wonder: “What would I have brought with me?”.

For his current project «So.lil.o.quy», Alec Von Bargen visited and photographed several projects of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in ten countries. At the heart of his work are in-depth observation and dialogue with his environment. The resulting photographs show the inspiration obtained by the artist from the struggles of people for survival and the proximity that comes from humanitarian aid.

Over the course of two years and in seven countries, Gregor Sailer captured agglomerations built to make soldiers, tourists, roadside security officers, and even Vladimir Putin, believe things that were not. The title Potemkin Village comes from Russian Field Marshal Potjomkin who is believed to have built beautiful fake villages in 1787, in the recently conquered Crimea, to hide the squalor from tsarina Katarina II.

Video games create universes, tell stories, and allow us to embody multiple roles. How does gender shape these virtual worlds? What positions do men and women occupy within them? The exhibition gives the opportunity to discover games that bring to life less stereotypical heroes and heroines, and to take up the controllers to understand what is at play between gender and video gaming.

This exhibition is presented as part of the opening of the Semaine de l’égalité.

Prison looks at incarceration from all angles – from imprisonment and exclusion to detention conditions, social reintegration and restorative justice. In addition to exploring the historical, philosophical, anthropological and sociological aspects of incarceration, the exhibition features musical creations, photos, literary excerpts, films and first-hand accounts. In revealing the ambiguous reality of detention, it breaks down stereotypes and raises the possibility of alternatives to a punitive system that dates back to the 18th century.

Light on the Move is a selection of 15 images that shows the daily life and the challenges refugees and internally displaced people face while on the move and after settling down in their new environment. “Light on the Move” is the hope and resilience of those people affected by conflict, poverty, etc.

Exhibition based on the film The Scavengers by Pascal Greco, followed by the world premiere of the film.

In Hong Kong, Pascal Greco followed "Popo" (grandmother) Lee, Chui & Lai in the hardness and ingratitude of their work, observing their extreme wisdom and courage.

Are "scavengers" the "collateral damage" of a rapid industrialization, a society desensitized to the community, indifferent to listening to its neighbour, which no longer has respect for its elders, committed to individualistic, egocentric motivations and diverted from any form of humanity?

The vernissage will take place prior to the preview screening of The Scavengers, on 12 March at 20:30, in the Vitrine of the CinéLux. 100% of the sales will go to 2 associations involved in helping these elderly people by bringing food and medicine.

A 140 square mile land strip with more than 2 million people struggling for survival amidst ruins, beleaguered by daily dramatic shortages of facilities. A life known the world over for its destruction and sufferings. A local photographer’s outcry shares his vision of ongoing resilience and hope.

In addition to the scenes of Syrians or Africans trying to reach the European coasts between 2015 and 2016 at the risk of their lives, in 2018 there were also those of thousands of Hondurans walking for more than a month to reach the American border. The year 2018 was also marked by the massive exodus of Venezuelans fleeing the economic and political crisis in their country. Not to mention another exodus, that of some 700,000 Rohingya who have fled the violence, since the launch in August 2017 of a Burmese army offensive against Muslim rebels. AFP followed them on their journey to share their hopes, disappointments, joys and challenges.
