Incest, a deafening silence

Is there a greater taboo than incest? For decades, the social sciences have considered incest essentially from one angle: its prohibition. For Claude Lévi-Strauss: "The prohibition of incest constitutes a rule which, unique among all social rules, has a universal character". However, although it is a taboo subject to talk about, incest is systematically practised to the point of structuring human societies, as the anthropologist Dorothée Dussy reveals. The incestuous system is a pedagogy of submission and resignation, a primal training tool for exploitation, especially of children by adults. On the one hand, victims feel abandoned and do not dare to speak out; on the other hand, those around them give orders to remain silent or turn a deaf ear. Is it not the law of silence that makes incestuous violence possible?
