Femicides: why do men kill?

Once considered an activism issue, femicide has now entered the mainstream vocabulary beyond feminist activist circles. According to a 2022 UN Women report, "violence against women and girls is one of the most common human rights abuses in the world". Indeed, every hour, more than five women or girls are murdered by someone close to them simply because they are women. These figures are only estimates, and the true scale of these crimes is possibly much greater. Why do men around the world continue to kill women? According to Argentinian-Brazilian theorist Rita Laura Segato, gender violence is the breeding ground for all other forms of violence. What is gender violence if not the last resort to regain a position of territorial domination and power over women's bodies?

My Name is Happy

By Ayşe Toprak & Nick Read

Mutlu, a Kurdish teenager from South East  Turkey, is destined for a career in music following her appearance on a televised singing competition. On the eve of the final, she is shot by a man she had rejected. Mutlu survives but with life-changing injuries. A few years later, while still recovering, she is affected by a new tragedy. "My Name is Happy" is an emotionally gripping film about a patriarchal Turkish society plagued by feminicide, from the point of view of the survivors and the women seeking justice.
