To avoid falling back into a cycle of violence, the process of transition to peace and democracy in South Sudan must include all components of the society.

Following a brutal civil war, Southern Sudan gained autonomy by referendum in 2011 and became not only the youngest country in the world, but also one of the poorest in spite of its oil resources. In 2013, the conflict resumed, this time internally. This new war has triggered a major crisis causing nearly 380,000 deaths and more than 2.4 million displaced persons. How can we escape this cycle of violence and return to the path of peace? What strategies and actions are needed to ensure peace and prevent human rights violations in the long term? The challenge, now, is to value and encourage local and national peace-building initiatives in order to live in a democratic state that speaks for all South Sudanese.
